Back to School Night- A success! Thank you for coming! It was great seeing you all! Please be sure to return all completed forms:
- Medical Authorization (needed for ALL field trips)
- Parent/Student Handbook (just the back page please)
- Volunteer driver form (if you are interested in volunteering for the Petaluma Adobe overnight trip)
- Parent wish for child (green slip of paper)
- Self Addressed envelope (for me to send a good note home to your child this year!)

Character Corner: Respect is our class virtue this month. Our class came up with expectations for behavior last month. Please review with your child our classroom agreements:
1. Use respect at all times.
2. Follow directions quickly.
3. Be safe at all times.
4. Make responsible choices.
5. Work hard and do your best.

Math:
- Unit Focus: Place Value to the hundred thousands, strategies for adding and subtracting larger numbers
- math games Target 1000 and Add, Round, Compare
- Practicing routines for Math Choice time. This is time during math, after our lesson is complete, where students may choose math related activities. Each day they have a "Must Do/May Do" list and once they finish their must do's, they can choose from things like: Math technology, math games, and task cards. During this time, I circulate around or meet with a small group of students.
Grammar/Writing:
- Unit Focus: Personal Narrative
- Grammar Mentor Sentence Study: Each week, we listen to a story that I have chosen a sentence from. We study that sentence all week. On Mondays, we notice what might make it a well written sentence. Tuesdays, we label parts of speech. On Thursday, we revise the sentence and imitate it by creating our own sentence in the author's style. On Friday, we take a grammar quiz based on what we learned.
- We will be starting our spelling practice as well this month. Spelling will be done in class, with a focus on learning spelling patterns, Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
- Last month, We interviewed a classmate to learn what's important about them. We wrote an "Important Paragraph" in the style of The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown which we in class.
Reading:
- Unit 1 Becoming Researchers- Readers will use point of view in literary text and use reasons and evidence in informational text to better understand what they read. Students will understand that researchers and scientists adopt specific habits to accomplish tasks.
- We finished reading our first story, Science Squad: Porpoises in Peril. Other texts this month: Mary Anning: The Girl who Cracked Open the World, Fragile Frogs, Nosing Around, and A Coat of Many Colors.
- Routines and procedures for ELA Choice Time. During this time, students will be engaged in different reading/writing activities: Independent reading, fluency practice, vocabulary practice, reading with a small group, etc. Choice time will be when students can log their completed books toward their 40 Book Challenge, and write in their response journals about their independent reading.
Science/Social Studies:
- Beginning our study of California history with discovering the 4 geographical regions of our great state! We will learn what makes each region- the coast, Central Valley, mountains, and desert- unique.
- In Mystery Science, we will be starting our first unit- Human Machine: "This introductory human body unit takes the perspective that we can think about our bodies as being like a machine. We have parts for moving around, sensors, and a built-in computer. Students explore their senses and consider how the information we process helps us understand and react to our environment."
Specials:
